Halloween I Spy Activity for Kids Free Printable

Looking for a Halloween activity that feels a little more exciting than a regular I Spy worksheet?

This Halloween I Spy Water Reveal Activity turns a simple printable into a hands-on Halloween search game. Kids use a clear cup to reveal hidden Halloween pictures underneath spooky colored water, then check off each item as they find it.

It’s part I Spy game, sensory play, and Halloween printable activity all in one — and it is surprisingly simple to set up.

If you liked my Fall I Spy Water Reveal Activity, this Halloween version uses the same fun idea with pumpkins, ghosts, bats, witches, spider webs, black cats, and more.

The printable includes two pages.

The first is a Halloween I Spy picture sheet filled with kid-friendly Halloween images. The second is a matching Halloween I Spy checklist so kids can mark off each item after they uncover it.

The Halloween items include:

  • Pumpkin
  • Black cat
  • Spider web
  • Spider
  • Witch
  • Skeleton
  • Spooky ghost
  • Bat
  • Moon
  • Vampire
  • Candy
  • Haunted house

The pictures are cute rather than scary, so this works well for younger kids, preschoolers, kindergarteners, classroom Halloween activities, or family Halloween fun.

What Makes This Halloween I Spy Different?

Normally, an I Spy printable is pretty straightforward — look at the page and find the pictures.

This one adds a little Halloween magic.

The picture sheet goes underneath a clear glass dish. Then you cover it with colored water so the pictures are difficult to see.

Kids move a clear glass or cup around the tray. When the bottom of the cup presses against the dish, the colored water moves away and creates a little clear viewing window.

Suddenly, a Halloween picture appears underneath. When they find something, they check it off on the I Spy sheet.

It feels a little like searching through a witch’s potion!

Supplies

You only need a few simple supplies:

  • Halloween I Spy printable
  • Matching Halloween checklist
  • Clear shallow glass dish or tray
  • Water
  • Green acrylic coloring or washable liquid watercolor
  • Clear cup or glass
  • Pencil, crayon, or marker for checking off the items

I used green water for mine because it gives the activity that fun witch’s potion look. Purple, orange, or even dark red would also work for a Halloween version.

For younger children, you may prefer a clear plastic tray and plastic cup rather than glass.

How to Set Up the Halloween Water Reveal I Spy

1. Print the Halloween I Spy Sheets

Print the picture page and matching checklist. Place the picture sheet underneath the clear dish.

2. Add Water

Pour a shallow layer of water into the dish. You only need enough water to cover the bottom.

3. Make Your Witch’s Potion

Add a few drops of green coloring and mix. I preferred acrylic as food colors were not making the water opaque.

Keep adding color until the water is dark enough that the Halloween pictures underneath are difficult to see. You can use corn floor if your water is still very transparent.

You don’t want it completely opaque — just dark enough to make kids use the cup to search.

4. Add the Clear Cup

Place a flat bottom clear cup or small glass upright inside the dish. Gently press the bottom against the dish.

The cup pushes the colored water away from that small area, revealing the picture underneath.

5. Start Searching

Let kids slowly move the cup around the tray.

When they uncover a pumpkin, ghost, bat, witch, or another Halloween picture, they can find the matching item on their checklist and tick the box. Keep going until they find all 12.

Turn It Into a Witch’s Potion I Spy

For Halloween, I think calling the green water a witch’s potion makes the activity even more fun.

You can tell kids:

“Some Halloween pictures are hiding underneath the potion. Move your magic viewing cup around and see what you can discover.”

It adds a little pretend play without making the activity complicated.

You could even place a few plastic spiders or Halloween decorations around the tray before you start.

A Fun Halloween Sensory Activity

This activity is fun on its own, but it also gives younger kids a little sensory and fine-motor play.

As they move the cup around, they’re practicing:

  • Visual scanning
  • Picture recognition
  • Matching
  • Halloween vocabulary
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Fine motor control
  • Observation skills

And because they don’t know what is going to appear next, there’s a fun surprise element too.

Try “Can You Find…?”

Instead of letting kids search randomly, turn it into a simple listening game.

Call out one object at a time:

  • Can you find the black cat?
  • Can you find something that flies at night?
  • Can you find the haunted house?
  • Can you find something a witch might ride?
  • Can you find the candy?

This works especially well with preschoolers or small groups.

Perfect for a Halloween Classroom Center

This Halloween I Spy activity would be easy to set up as a classroom or preschool center. Place the tray and picture sheet at one station and keep the checklist beside it.

Children can take turns searching for the hidden Halloween pictures. If several kids will use it, you could laminate the checklist and let them use dry-erase markers.

It would also work well for:

  • Preschool Halloween activities
  • Kindergarten centers
  • Halloween classroom parties
  • Homeschool
  • Sensory play
  • Halloween playdates
  • Quiet-time activities
  • After-school Halloween fun
