What Does “You’ve Been Booed” Mean?

“You’ve Been Booed” is a Halloween tradition where you secretly leave treats or a small Halloween gift for a neighbor, teacher, coworker, friend, or family.

Along with the treats, you leave a You’ve Been Booed sign and instructions explaining how they can keep the tradition going.

You don’t need anything fancy or expensive, Just put together a small basket or bag of Halloween goodies, add a You’ve Been Booed printable, secretly leave it at someone’s door, and let them continue the fun.

I created this printable set with everything you need to make your Halloween booing easy, cute, and ready to share.

Once someone has been booed, they place the sign on their front door or somewhere visible in a window. That lets everyone know their house has already received a surprise.

Then they choose two more people to surprise. Before long, you may start spotting Boo signs popping up all over the neighborhood!

How to Boo

Choose a neighbor, friend, teacher, family member, or another family you think would enjoy a Halloween surprise. Fill a basket, gift bag, Halloween bucket, or even a simple paper bag with treats.

Print your You’ve Been Booed sign, add the instruction card, attach one of the gift tags, and secretly make your kids leave everything by their front door sneakingly.

The booed sign tells them they’ve been booed and to enjoy the surprise. Then instructions printable tells them what to do if they want to keep the game going on one side and on the other side it has a sign that says “We’ve Been Booed”.

Since booing is usually done anonymously, the recipient places the “We’ve Been Booed” sign on their front door or in a window where neighbors can easily see it.

This lets everyone know that their family has already been booed, so the next surprise can go to someone else.

What to Put in a Halloween Boo Basket

Your Boo Basket definitely doesn’t need to be expensive.

You could add:

  • Halloween candy or chocolates
  • Mini cookies or packaged snacks
  • Halloween pencils or erasers
  • Stickers
  • Glow sticks
  • Mini coloring books
  • Small Halloween toys
  • Temporary tattoos
  • Popcorn
  • Hot cocoa packets
  • Halloween socks
  • A small pumpkin
  • Homemade treats
  • Printable Halloween activities for kids

For younger children, I love the idea of including a few non-candy Halloween treats along with one or two treats. It makes the basket feel extra special without needing to fill it completely with sweets.

Printable You’ve Been Booed Signs and Tags

In this set, I have included a few different ways to put your Boo surprise together instead of including just one basic sign.

The booed printable pack includes You’ve Been Booed signs, an instruction sheet, Halloween pennant-style decorations, boo basket gift tags, 2.5-inch round boo basket tags, 5 x 7-inch cards, and door hangers.

The rectangular gift tags measure approximately 2.3 x 4 inches, while the round tags are 2.5 inches in diameter.

The designs use cute little ghosts with orange, black, purple, and neutral Halloween colors, so they work well for both kids and family Boo baskets.

You can use the smaller gift tags on treat bags, tie one around a Halloween bucket, or simply staple one onto a bag of goodies.

Make a Simple Boo Basket

Don’t feel like you need a perfectly styled Halloween basket.

A small bucket from the dollar store with a few treats is more than enough.

Add some tissue paper, place your treats inside, attach your You’ve Been Booed gift tag, and tuck the printable sign and instructions into the basket.

You can also use a paper gift bag and attach one of the round Boo tags to the front.

The surprise is what makes this Halloween tradition special — not how much you spend.

Booing Friends Instead of Neighbors

You don’t have to live in a neighborhood where everyone knows each other to enjoy this activity.

You can Boo: your best friend’s family, cousins, grandparents, classmates, another school family, coworkers, or even your own kids.

You could also turn it into a little Halloween surprise for someone who could use some cheering up during October.

For classroom use, teachers could adapt the idea into a You’ve Been Booed classroom surprise where children secretly leave a kind note or small treat for another class.

How to Print Your You’ve Been Booed Printables

Print the pages you want to use at home or send them to your favorite print shop.

Regular printer paper works well for the instruction sheet, but I recommend using cardstock for gift tags, signs, and anything you would like to reuse or display.

After printing, simply cut around the tags or cards.

For hanging gift tags, punch a small hole near the top and add ribbon, twine, or string.

You could also laminate the larger Boo sign if you want it to hold up better on a front door.
